In an ideal world, VoIP providers would deliver faultlessly clear call quality, 100% reliability; a great set of features and charge you hardly anything at all. In reality, that is pretty much what the very best services on offer today do provide.

Hosted VoIP works and it works very well indeed. There are plenty of suppliers to choose from and some of them offer excellent and dependable services that are eminently affordable and provide much more flexibility and versatility than could ever be offered by old analogue telephony set-ups.

Realistically, it is now not unreasonable to expect your VoIP service provider to have a decent reputation and track-record. This does not necessarily mean that they have to be a recognised household name. Indeed, most of the successful and established providers of hosted VoIP are unfamiliar names to most businesses even today.

But they may well have a very good reputation and record in other markets (such as North America, where VoIP has really caught on in a big way) and have built up a sizeable business. If they have got that far, you can safely assume they are doing something right, and there should be lots of evidence to that effect available online. It is reasonable for you to expect the technology to work and be reliable.

It is also perfectly acceptable to expect a good level of service and support. An established base of customers (preferably businesses like your own) is a good sign here. The most successful suppliers are also likely to work via their reseller partners, as this is the best way of reaching the full extent of the market. These partnerships may not be that long-standing if the supplier originates from outside the UK, but the partners themselves should also have a decent track record you can check out.

The service itself has to tick all the boxes as well of course. It must provide added flexibility, efficiency and control, but then that is the whole point of VoIP services and, as long as you select the right supplier, that’s what they will deliver.
