The world’s highest mountain is lying among the several other daunting peaks making the whole region the most remote in the Himalayas. While Everest base camp on the Nepal side is a popular trekking destination, the base camp on the Tibetan side could be visited as a detour of a road trip to Lhasa. The Everest north base camp is just a day’s drive away (360 km) from Shigatse, the second largest city of Tibet connected by the highest train in the world. However, it is not easy to get into Tibet. The tour should be pre-organized through a travel agency. There are several permits on basis of which visa is issued. Moreover tourist need to book a package with local tour guide, transportation and accommodation at least couple of weeks ago. Foreigners can’t travel on their own in Tibet.

High altitude is another thing to consider while travelling to Tibet. There are several ways to get to Tibet. High altitude train connects Lhasa with different cities of China. One need to spend good enough time acclimatizing before the journey. The best way to travel to Tibet is from Nepal. The overland trip from Kathmandu to Lhasa is quiet popular. There are also regular flight to Lhasa from Kathmandu.
