An article in a business magazine in the 1970’s gave an example of the difference between Government and Private Enterprise. It said anyone could get the plans on how to make a nuclear bomb from almost any news stand, yet the secret to the essence of Coca Cola or the recipe for KFC’s eleven herbs and spices still remain a mystery.
For obvious reasons, many companies like to keep their product design and intellectual property closely guarded, but in the spirit of full disclosure, the manufacturers of the Australian Truedek Steel Decking system are happy to explain why Truedek is the strongest product on the market and a quantum leap above its competitors.
The reason is all in the design. The Truedek beam, sometimes called the Truedek panel or truss, is the end result of number of design engineers looking at the existing technology and making some major improvements on the existing products on the market to produce a structural beam that solved all the requirement of the industry, yet was stronger, lighter and could span further.
The collaboration of the Engineers at OneSteel Reinforcing and the University of Western Sydney developed a number of prototypes, each progressively improved on the last and in 2004, with additional modifications and inclusion of the rollforming expertise of Premier Steel Technologies, the Trussdek II panel was launched. The product is now owned by Premier Steel and has since been renamed Truedek.
The Truedek beam is a remarkably strong product, made up of 4 different rollformed panels to form a trapezoid shape. It consists of a bottom and top chord, each individually manufactured with longitudinal ribs and 2 side panels rolled with lateral webs to maximize the strength of each steel strip - and each can be made in various metal thicknesses to suit. These are then brought together and riveted with the state-of-the-art German Tox blind riveting system. Each beam is custom made with a pre-camber to suit the concrete load for the job, which also ensures a flat soffit. As it is manufactured to a plan, there is no cutting on site, so no wastage or clean up costs.
Another part of the design flexibility is the layout. As most jobs are for standard floors, the 250mm beams are interlocked together to form a platform, however for thinner floors or where no concrete is used - as in a mezzanine floor with structural plywood, beams can be halved with an infill panel interlocking them, in a beam/pan/beam, (or truss/pan/truss) configuration, resulting in a substantial cost saving.
