Select Teachers launches State of the ESL Industry Survey

Select Teachers launches State of the ESL Industry Survey 2016-08-10 09:21:26
Shanghai-based Select Teachers today launched its State of the ESL Industry Survey for teachers who teach English as a Second Language.

The survey; the first of its kind is designed to gather global data on working conditions throughout the industry, including everything from class sizes and technology, to salaries. The aim is to provide this information back to teachers freely to help them understand their place in a huge fragmented global industry employing several million people, yet has no single voice or standards, by proving this information teachers will be able to see, for example, if their salary is in line with industry standards, if their class sizes are average and if their classrooms are well equipped We hope it will give them that extra layer of support when trying to decide between positions and what is considered the norm for their country.

“As we collect data to benchmark the industry it will allow ESL teachers to be better informed about acceptable and common working conditions. The industry has changed considerably since 2008 when there was an oversupply of teachers due to the economic situation in the west, to now, where there is a considerable under supply of qualified ESL teachers as poor conditions have driven people away from the industry.“ Craig said

The State of the ESL industry is just one of several initiatives that Select Teachers is undertaking in order to provide a global community for ESL teachers around the world. The days of English teaching being about people backpacking around the world are long gone as visa requirements get stricter and global players dominate the market. We want to make sure these global players provide fair compensation and legal contracts for teachers, who after all, are the ones that generate the revenues for these companies.
