Panoramic thrill of Ghorepani – Poon hill trek

With the view of over a dozen of majestic Himalayan peaks astride the world’s deepest gorge, Ghorepani village is one of the most scenic places in the world. View of three highest peaks in the world, Kaligandaki valley wedged between two 8,000 m peaks and the land of famous solders ‘Gurkhas’ have made the place popular among foreign trekkers as well as locals.

In last 2 years number of tourists visiting Ghorepani village in Annapurna have increased more than double. Number of tourist visiting Ghorepani in 2015 was 19,348 which increased to 45,685 in succeeding years. “Significant number of domestic tourists visiting the place increased the trekkers in the region. Ghorepani is the most scenic place that could be accessed easily from cities like Kathmandu and Pokhara. This attracted the youths looking for short active holiday. Trekkers going to Annapurna base camp, Mustang and Annapurna circuit also make a detour of Ghorepani.“said Kedar Pun a hotel entrepreneur from Ghorepani village.


Ghorepani is 2,810 m mountain pass along the ancient salt trading route in the Himalayas. The place gave access to the world’s deepest Kaligandaki gorge wedged between two 8,000 m peaks – Annapurna I (8,190 m) and Dhaulagiri (8,167 m). The place is overlooking into the Himalayan range of Dhaulagiri, Annapurna and Manaslu. The village has got comfortable teahouse run by locals to accommodation and cater tourists.

Poon Hill is a ridge top at 3,190 m above Ghorepani. Most of the tourists coming to Ghorepani climb to Poon Hill for sunrise view over the Himalayas and the sweeping Kaligandaki valley. The view is mesmerizing. Whole scenery changes its color from pink to red, orange and yellow with in short time making everyone just click all the time.

Ghorepani Trek

The trek is about 5 days long starting and ending in Pokhara. It starts with a short drive from Pokhara and then climbs 1,700 m to Ghorepani in two days. It is moderately difficult trek with long stretch of climbing. The trail first passes through the farming terraces and charming villages with thatch and slate roofs. In the higher reaches, it enter into the Rhododendron forest which is recognized as the world’s biggest Rhododendron forest.

Trekkers come across two ethnic territory of Magars and Gurungs. Both of the ethnic groups are culturally rich, simple farmers. In last century they were the most preferred recruits for the British Gurkha. Gurkha have their reputation for being bravest solders. The trek will also let you closely observe their social and cultural life. One will be defiantly touched by their smile despite hardship.
