The largest reunion of Singaporean expats was held in Melbourne on September 9, 2017 at the Flemington Racecourse. Over 6000 people gathered at The Singapore Day 2017 celebrations with their families and friends to enjoy all things they love about their home.
Talent company Promo People participated in this event by providing brand ambassadors and premier promotional staff. The company has been supplying talent across Australia through its offices in Melbourne and Sydney. For The Singapore Day 2017 their staff was involved in a range of promotions and events that included flyer distribution, hosting of corporate events and marketing.
From delectable hawker fare to entertainment from home-grown talent and interactive exhibits on the latest developments in Singapore, the cultural day had something for everyone. Singapore Day is the Overseas Singaporean Unit's signature event for its people residing overseas. It is a day-long event that brings together the sights, sounds, taste and smells of Singapore abroad. There is nothing more comforting than to be able to indulge and reacquaint with a slice of home while overseas. It is held in cities with a large concentration of overseas Singaporeans.
Among the exhibits on display was a special installation, "Hearts for Home". Made up of paper hearts folded by Singaporeans across Australia in Canberra, Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide and Hobart, the installation was meant to showcase the contribution of overseas Singaporeans. One of the most notable events was fundraising for SG Cares. By folding 7,000 paper hearts and donating online Singaporeans managed to raise a substantial sum to support the underprivileged back home. The community leaders presented a cheque of $35,000 to Singapore’s Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean.
Photo contests, social media campaigns, exhibits and installations all relived fond memories of home and kept visitors up to date regarding the latest economic, social and cultural developments. Sixteen hawker stalls were set up at the event to serve up a taste of Singapore to the participants.
The highly anticipated get-together was put together by the High Commission of Singapore along with other private and government agencies. Thousands of Singaporeans invested time and effort to participate in events leading up to the big day. This was the third Singapore Day to be held in Australia following previous editions in Melbourne and Sydney in 2008 and 2013, respectively. The commitment, effort, and passion of hawkers, artistes, volunteers, and various other key representatives involved made The Singapore Day 2017 a resounding success.
