Doug Shear is producing a stage play where an actor performing the role of the Prophet Muhammad sings and dances. The play, called NO PICTURES PLEASE! will include local talent from the Miami area. Shear is currently raising funds on Indiegogo to cover the costs for security, actor salaries and terrorism insurance (yes it’s a real thing).

LOCAL PLAYWRIGHT RISKS IT ALL TO BRING CONTROVERSIAL STORY TO THE STAGE
After the terrorist attacks in Brussels and Paris, Miami playwright Doug Shear has been condemned by colleagues, friends and even some family members for attempting to bring his Prophet Muhammad-themed stage play to life. Refusing to abandon the project, Shear has taken his satirical comedy, NO PICTURES PLEASE!, to Indiegogo in hopes of obtaining funding to produce and film a live presentation.
In Doug’s play, there are scenes of women in burqas singing and dancing, a bumbling producer and a security guard in way over his head. Midway through the story, Muhammad himself appears on stage, dressed in an Elton John costume complete with sparking jewels, sequins and flamboyant colors.
“I suppose some Muslims might consider that offensive,” Doug said regarding the controversial portrayal of the religious figure. “But satire is always offensive to the people being satirized. It’s called free speech. Why is the Prophet Muhammad the only public figure, living or dead, who cannot be shown in film, stage plays, television or any mainstream media? It’s insane!”
Many European artists and publications, such as Kurt Westergaard and Charlie Hebdo, who have published Muhammad images have had to contend with the fallout and occasional violence. Radical Islamic groups have labelled creators of these images as blasphemers deserving of death.
Out of concern for similar retaliation to his work, Shear has turned to Indiegogo, www.indiegogo.com/projects/no-pictures-please/x/228873#/
a crowdfunding service which allows patrons to submit anonymous donations. “We need to hire security, pay actors and even invest in terrorism insurance for our venue,” Doug said. Right now, we’re focusing on reaching out to all the brave artistic people in America who aren’t afraid to support freedom of speech. Maybe Donald Trump will chip in.”
If the campaign is not fully funded, Doug will seek other means to get it produced and performed in Miami.
This isn’t the first time Doug Shear has pushed the envelope on social convention. He distributed Fidel Castro Voodoo Dolls to Cubans in Miami, published a memoir called American Karma – Twilight of the Marijuana Gods, and wrote a novel that included The Apocalyptic Cookbook – How to Catch, Kill & Cook Everything. His stage plays and monologues have been performed in both South Florida and Toronto, and he has appeared several times at the popular Lip Service Stories event at the Miracle Theatre in Coral Gables, Florida.
