BACHMAN WINS Px3: Photojournalist Jonathan Bachman is the winner of this year’s Px3 Photographer of the Year Award for the Press Category.
Created in 2004, the “Prix de la Photographie, Paris” (Px3) was created to promote the appreciation of photography, to discover emerging talent, and to introduce photographers from around the world to the artistic community of Paris. Photography Director of AtEdge Susan Baraz, Director of Talent & Content at Annenberg Space for Photography Patricia Lanza and Artistic Director of the Yangon Photo Festival Christophe Loviny are three of the esteemed jurors who selected the winners this year.
Bachman studied photojournalism at Loyola University in New Orleans, Louisiana before joining the Associated Press and Reuters as a freelance photographer in 2012. By 2016, Bachman was assigned to cover the killing of Alton Sterling, a 37-year-old black man who was shot and killed at close range while held down on the ground by Baton Rouge police. Gaining international attention for this photograph, Bachman continues to cover demonstrations of unrest and other breaking news for the Associated Press, Getty Images, and Reuters in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Another Px3 winner for 2017 is Luca Izzo, who won the Px3 Best New Talent Award for his Fine Art series “DESFORMES.” Luca Izzo, originally from Italy but now working and residing in France, has embraced an artistic subject matter where human bodies themselves are sculptural objects. Izzo desires to “realize images combined with the study of artistic structures of the Twentieth century, influenced by cinema, painting, and photography.” In 2017 alone, he has been recognized for his fine art photography work with nudes by four independent fine art and photography awards organizations, and has been included in gallery exhibitions throughout Europe and beyond.
Winning photographs from the Px3 competition will be exhibited the gallery Espace Beaurepaire in Paris, July 2017, and will additionally be published in the Px3 Annual Book of Photography. Learn more at px3.fr
