How to protect the ventilation system from external influences - Useful tips from HVAC Contractor

The ventilation system of the house needs protection from getting foreign objects, precipitation, cold action. About the methods and materials used for protection, it will be discussed in the article.

In order to safely and efficiently operate domestic gas and heating appliances, it is necessary to ensure their proper removal of combustion products and air exchange in the room. For tapping use ventilation ducts, which are lined to protect from moisture and cold.

Ventilation systems are divided into 3 types:

1. A channel that draws gases from diesel and gas boilers.

2. Chimney, which removes combustion products from heating devices operating on solid fuel.

3. Ventilation - it removes air with pollution from the premises using grids, they are installed in the dwelling. Each room has its own outlet channel.

Material for protection of the ventilation system

To coat the ventilation pipes, it is preferable to choose materials that are not affected by atmospheric conditions. For flue and gas exhaust pipes, materials from non-combustible means are needed, the inside of the device must have the ability to withstand the highest temperatures.

When choosing a protective material, make sure that you have the necessary certificates that speak about its properties.

Protection against moisture

Channels for ventilation in chimneys must be protected from atmospheric precipitation. For this purpose, a special cornice is installed, which is called a "cap", it is usually made of concrete (B15 minimum) reinforced with a rod up to 6 mm in diameter. You can buy a similar "cap" of batch production, and also make it yourself. The solution depends on the size - large caps are heavy and bulky, lifting them to the roof and mounting - it's quite a complicated matter.

Whichever way the cap is made, the top of the product should be with a small slope, the lower part plays the role of a drip, the edges should protrude at least 10 cm beyond the canal. Such a device will not allow rain to enter the chimney. When arranging the channel passage, remember the compensation gap.

The ventilation ducts are completely covered with a cap, in the walls of the pipe, side openings are left on both sides and covered with a grid. It is acquired with a sufficient diameter of the cells, so that they do not clog up with mud, otherwise the air supply will stop.

How to insulate the pipe

Great influence on the thermal insulation is provided by traction in ventilation ducts. Modern heating appliances have a relatively small temperature of the exhausted gases (up to 40 degrees). If there is insufficient insulation, the pipes quickly lose heat. Especially important is the thermal insulation for channels extending more than 50 cm. In the channels having an insert, it is necessary to make insulation from the inside, and external - to insulate additionally. In brick pipes, external insulation is used.

Isolation of ventilation ducts

Sometimes setting the right insulation seems to be a minor matter, but it's far from the case. If you have installed a quality insulation, then reliably protect the room from condensation, loss of energy, reduce the noise level, which is transmitted through channels without insulation. Central ventilation with air conditioning in our time is not considered a luxury, it has become a common thing.

The most common protection channels - the use of mineral wool, it is strengthened with foil, serving as diffusion protection. This method is simple in the sense of installation, but has some negative aspects that reduce its attractiveness. Among them - the susceptibility to mechanical damage that occurs during installation, although the protective layer and protects from the formation of moisture.

The appearance of damage will lead to the fact that the wool will begin to gain moisture. In addition to humidity on the walls, the development of microorganisms harmful to humans can begin. In addition, the fibrous structure of the wool accumulates dust that damages the health. Often this is typical for office premises, since they have a central ventilation system.

To solve the problem of making insulation, began to use synthetic rubber. Its advantage lies in the isolation and integrity of the structure. In addition, this material is not very susceptible to mechanical damage. The presence of elasticity will not become a hindrance, since rubber is able to shrink.

Prevention

Channels need not only to protect, but also to conduct preventive actions on a regular basis. They consist of cleaning and checking for mechanical damage. As a rule, these actions are carried out at certain time intervals. First of all, this refers to centralized systems, in them the failure of one element can lead to damage to the entire system.

Regular prevention provides time and material savings. Proper protection and operation of ventilation and heating systems will protect the room and your health.
