In 1969 Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first men to walk on the moon. Sadly their historic boots were left on the moon and lost to the world. But now the original NASA mould that actually made one of those boots has been discovered on eBay.

“This is the very mould that created man’s first footprints on the moon” says David Mather, industrial designer, space suit specialist and the mould’s new owner. Research has shown this to also be the same mold that produced one of the most iconic images of the moon landings - Buzz Aldrin’s footprint in the lunar dust.

Sold as surplus at the end of the Apollo missions in 1972 and lost for forty years, the mould appeared for sale on the auction website eBay. When David bought the mould he did not appreciate its true significance. Only when he started researching the history of the moon boot did he realise just how important a role this mould actually played in the success of the first moon landing.

The historic mould is now being used one last time for a limited edition presentation that will recreate the sole of Neil Armstrong’s actual moon boot in perfect detail from exactly the same silicone compound used by NASA in 1969. “This moon boot sole is probably the closest you and I will ever come to Neil Armstrong’s original boot that changed the world with “one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind” says David. “Today this is still such a powerful and inspiring symbol of what we can all achieve”.

David has also written a book exclusively to accompany the project with the assistance of the original moon boot manufacturer, ILC, and the Smithsonian’s National Air & Space Museum.

" I bought the mould seven years ago on eBay and left it in the box as I was in the middle of a substantial house restoration. A company in the USA was claiming in their promotional video that they had the original Apollo moon boot mould, so I paid little attention to my version.

It was only when I visited that company and realised that theirs was for an early prototype, so I started to look at my mould a little closer. I spent two years researching the Apollo moon boot and finally realised the significance of what I had. I wanted to share the mould with other space enthusiasts so designed a moon boot presentation (I am an industrial designer), and to put it all into context I have also written what I believe to be the first book dedicated to the Apollo moon boot."
