There have been some disputes in the medical and scientific community regarding which dietary supplement based on safflower oil is more efficient in reducing the weight in the case of people suffering from morbid obesity and diabetes.

The competition is mainly between two important brands, and it is about how much more effective safflower oil is compared to CLA. Top researchers of CLA consider they have enough data to set the record straight and talk about the results obtained in different clinical trials. They are convinced that this product can improve the lives of people dealing with obesity regardless of its degree.

Safflower oil versus CLA (Conjugated Linoleic Acid)

The public interest in the benefits of safflower oil exploded after Dr. Oz talked about this product on his show. In that episode, Montel William, the spokesperson of a dietary supplement manufacturer promoted the positive influence of safflower oil on the health, especially the product sold by that specific company. The official website which promotes the benefits of safflower oil quotes a study conducted by Ohio State University which claims „the safflower oil is superior in attacking belly fat. Safflower oil has been shown in a major university study to help reduce belly fat up to 9.4%, or 6 times more than the leading omega oil, in only 16 weeks without diet or exercise”. The advertiser goes further and suggests that if you are „looking for something even better than CLA” you should buy this product because a study „found that SAF outperformed CLA with a 6.3% reduction of belly fat and a 20.3% increase in adiponectin, an important belly fat hormone that regulates sugar and fat stores”.

The specialists working on CLA decided to take action and respond to the innuendo. Dr. Michael Pariza considered the accusations to be „not factual and certainly not supported by the study referenced.” He says that the scientists working on that study suggested that safflower oil might be synergistic, not superior to CLA. Besides, the two substances started to show effects at different dosages. CLA only required doses of 3 grams per day, while in the case of safflower oil it was required a daily dose of 8 grams to start noticing its influence. And also the studies conducted on CLA revealed that indeed it reduced the adipose tissue and as a result, the BMI was also lower. Meanwhile, the safflower oil barely had any effect t all. Dr. Pariza admits using linoleic acid as a control substance during his studies because it is the most important fatty acid in safflower oil and there was nothing to indicate the fact that CLA is less efficient than SAF. As a matter of fact, he continues to support his findings „That showed that CLA reduces ed the body fat, whereas the best you could say about safflower oil is that in redistributed the body fat so that the subjects seem slimmer in the waist.”

His colleague, the Wisconsin University professor and researcher, Dr. Mark Cook, backed up Dr. Plaza in front of Nutraingredients USA. Vegetable oils obtained from individual plants like corn, sunflower and safflower contain high amounts of linoleic acid, between 50% and 80% so this substance was used as a control for adverse results in the studies the two doctors worked on together. The conclusion they reached was that by „replacing approximatively 5% to 10% of these vegetable oils with CLA was effective in markedly reducing fat accumulation and inflammation.” For them, there is no doubt that CLA can reduce body mass index while safflower oil barely had any noticeable effects.

One-third party, which has no financial involvement with the two major companies fighting for the first place on the weight loss dietary supplements market, tends to agree with the professor from the University of Wisconsin. Dr. Hizkias Keizer represents Stephan Lipid Nutrition, a well-known supplier for both companies. He presents another significant finding of a study called Belury in which it was noticed that CLA „reduces fat loss in placebo-controlled trials”. The results of this study are also promising because he noticed that „CLA works best on overweight and slightly obese people”, especially on those with diabetes because usually the people diagnosed with morbid obesity tend to have a different psychology.

While there is still need for further clinical trials on both CLA and safflower oil, the results so far encourage us to think that soon scientists will make a new discovery in the fight against obesity. There are still controversial aspects regarding the effects of Safflower oil and CLA, but the medical and scientific community is focused on clearing up all the rumors. It is important that such an essential substance is under review by some of the most reputed researchers in this field. All we can do for the moment is listen to the arguments and wait for the final conclusion that everyone will agree on. Hopefully, we don’t have to wait too long and meanwhile we can check the some facts from this review: www.hlbenefits.com/cla-safflower-oil-reviews/
