Frank L. Scott.
At a spry 93, the Board Chairman of the R.C. Baker Foundation and
Fullerton resident comes to work twice a week at his office in Orange and decides how and where to support nonprofit organizations, including the YMCA of Orange County Community Services Branch (YCS).
Scott will receive the John and Donna Crean Reach Out Award when he is honored at the 33rd Annual Reach Out Awards Oct. 3 at the Costa Mesa Hilton. The Reach Out Awards gala honors individuals and organizations that have "reached out" to help the neediest and most underserved children and families in Orange County. Last year's 300-guest event raised $210,000 in net proceeds for YCS and its programs.
"As nonprofit organizations reflect on their history, they will always consider Mr. Frank Scott as one of the most important people in their organization's climb to success," YCS Executive Director Kristen Thompson said. "Because of who we're honoring, this year's Reach Out Awards gala is one of the most notable fundraisers of the year in Orange County."
If Scott isn't salmon fishing in Alaska, tending to his rose garden orchestrated by his late wife, Flo, or taking trips back to Texas for the annual F. L. Scott "T.A.N.G." (There Ain't No Gimme's) Golf Tournament, he is working hard on behalf of charitable institutions such as the YMCA of Orange County Community Services Branch.
Scott, who grew up in Texas dreaming of becoming a famous artist, has touched the lives of thousands of people through charitable and nonprofit organizations, having directed more than $25 million in philanthropic assets as Board Chairman of the R.C. Baker Foundation to advance the missions and enhance the programs of several worthy causes, including North Orange County YMCA, Help for Brain Injured Children, Speech and Language Development Center, MiOcean, Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital, JSerra High School and St. Anne School. The YMCA of Orange County Community Services Branch, Yorba Linda/Placentia Y and West County Y have also benefited from the generous support of the R.C. Baker Foundation.
After Scott realized becoming a famous artist was likely not in the cards, he attended the University of Houston before getting married and beginning a 44-year career at Baker Oil Tools. Scott's quick rise to the top ranks of corporate leadership resulted in a move to Fullerton in 1963, when he began wearing two hats - one as corporate executive, the other as foundation director. After years of leading the complex mergers and acquisitions for Baker Oil Tools, which is now Baker Hughes, Inc., most men would have welcomed retirement. But Scott has continued to serve as Board Chairman of the R.C. Baker Foundation.
Scott joined the North Orange County YMCA Board of Directors in the 1970s and later served as Board Chairman.
The YMCA of Orange County Community Services Branch changes lives throughout Orange County by empowering children, families and communities with programs that offer intervention, education and opportunity. These unique services and partnerships include foster and at-risk youth mentoring; community health and wellness initiatives; counseling, developmental and bereavement support; and after-school enrichment and arts programs.
