2009-06-29 11:36:18 - World Choir Games 2012 to be held in the US for the first time

For the first time, the world's biggest choir festival will be held in the US. Cincinnati USA in the State of Ohio will be host city of the World Choir Games. From 4 to 14 July 2012, INTERKULTUR and its partners will jointly organise the 7th WCG.

The formal ceremony to announce Cincinnati as host city was attended not only by Ohio's First Lady, Frances Strickland, the mayor of Cincinnati, Mark Mallory, and David Pepper of the Hamilton County Board of Commissioners as representatives for the city and region Cincinnati USA, but also the by a delegation from INTERKULTUR led by its president, Günter Titsch. The well-known funk musician Bootsy Collins, a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame,

welcomed the guests.

Titsch said "Cincinnati offers excellent conditions for choirs and visitors alike". The concert venues, which include the Aronoff Center, the historic Music Hall and the University of Cincinnati, all boast first-class acoustic, technical and spatial conditions. In addition to the choir competition fixtures in the concert halls, the choirs will also have the chance to present their programmes to American and foreign guests in gala and encounter concerts in the city's numerous churches and public spaces.

Cincinnati has the added advantage that the venues for the World Choir Games are almost all located close to the centre of town. Apart from the festival itself in 2012, Cincinnati has plenty to offer food-lovers or shoppers, with its excellent restaurants and impressive malls. “I am sure”, emphasised Titsch, ”our American partners will welcome the worldwide choir community with their arms wide open.”

INTERKULTUR has ties to 120,000 choirs made up of 4.8 million choral singers around the world. In the twenty years since it was established, more than 5,000 choirs and some 230,000 singers from 100 nations have taken part in the World Choir Games and INTERKULTUR's regional choir competitions. The World Choir Games (WCG), which are dedicated to the founding Olympic ideal, take place every two years on a different continent. The next WCG will be held in 2010 in Shaoxing, China.
