The Chelsea Flower Show is no stranger to beautiful, extravagant examples of landscape gardening. But this year’s show really raised the bar. A landscaped garden made completely out of diamonds was unveiled.
The most expensive landscape gardening work in British horticultural history has been unveiled at the Chelsea Flower Show. Created by leading garden designer David Domoney and sponsored by a certain airline’s ‘diamond’ executive club, the garden is the most expensive ever created at Chelsea with £20 million worth of gems from an exclusive Bond Street jeweller. As a result, the garden will have more security protection on hand than at any other show garden in the world.
Landscape Gardening Taken to a New Level
The landscaped gardening work features a range of rare gems including a peony shaped ring with pink and green gems valued at approximately £1 million and a daisy shaped ring set with a rare, flawless blue diamond
worth in the region of £3.2 million. Whilst the walls of the garden have precious stones embedded in them, other features include diamond themed stepping stones that lead to a gems-themed patio, giving a bird’s eye view of a necklace.
High-Profile Landscape Gardener Involved
Domoney is a leading TV garden expert who has in the past created several landscape gardening works at Chelsea including The Da Vinci Garden, the Piranha infested Biotopes and the Ace of Spades Bikers Garden. He has a unique approach to gardening feeding his plants vodka, bananas, eggs, beer, aspirin and even Viagra!
Domoney has selected 22 jewel themed or named plants including ‘Hosta Diamond Tiara’, ‘Juniperus Emerald Spreader’ and ‘Pulmonaria Opal’
Mr Domoney said of his new garden: “This year, it's high-end and extreme but with a strong horticultural message.
‘We want to show how jewellery has been inspired by plants throughout history, such as use of the thistle in Celtic designs. Many varieties of plants and flowers have been named after jewels and gems.'
Who Knew Landscape Gardening could also be a Girl’s Best Friend?
The landscape garden is planted with flowers like thistles and peonies that have inspired jewellery as well as plants named after jewels, and boasts Chiltern marble, Roman plinths and backlit walls with semi-precious stones such as quartz and amethyst.
"The garden is much more than just the jewels," Domoney said. "It is celebrating the merging of plants and gemstones."
