WoodPellets.com will join Keene Mayor Philip Pregent; Tom Burack, Commisioner of the New Hampshire Department of Environmental

Services (DES), and representatives from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Hearth Patio and Barbeque Association to kick-off of a woodstove changeout campaign aimed at improving air quality in Keene, NH.

What: Event to announce the beginning of Keene’s Woodstove Changeout ProgramWhen: Thursday, October 22, 2009 at 11:00 a.m.Where: Railroad Square, Keene, NH

The Keene Woodstove Changeout Program encourages voluntary replacement of old inefficient wood-burning stoves with new, cleaner-burning fuel efficient woodstoves, pellet stoves, or gas heating systems. The campaign, modeled after the Environmental Protection Agency’s “Great American Woodstove Changeout,” will reduce emissions of small particle pollution from chimneys, especially when temperature inversions tend to trap smoke and air pollution in the valley during the cold winter months. Air monitors operated by the DES have shown that air quality in the Keene valley has been adversely affected by smoke from woodstoves.
Levels of particle pollution have been detected that are near or exceed national standards, placing the city and the county at risk for potential environmental violations.

In response to the Changeout Campaign, WoodPellets.com is offering a twenty-five dollar per ton discount on first-time pellet purchases to Keene homeowners who replace their woodstove with a pellet stove. Wood pellets are an affordable, environmentally-friendly renewable energy source produced in North America, creating local jobs and supporting local economies. Pellet fuel has been a price-stable heating energy solution for more than 20 years. According to recent numbers, the average homeowner heating with wood pellets can save approximately $4,000 vs. oil heat over the next five years. Heating with wood pellets is an ideal way for homeowners to save on heating bills while improving the environment.

“We are excited to be participating in this program,” said Jon Strimling, President and CEO of WoodPellets.com. “The Keene campaign is modeled after an EPA changeout that has already seen huge success. We’re looking forward to extending our expertise in pellet heating to Keene homeowners wishing to take advantage of the numerous environmental, cost and tax benefits associated with pellet stove heating.”

Attendees at this event will have ample opportunity to learn how the campaign will work and view displays of some of the latest clean-burning wood and pellet stoves, furnaces and boilers. City of Keene and DES officials will explain the campaign, including how participants can apply for rebate vouchers and how future air pollution reductions will be tracked.
