2014-04-25 22:29:29 - Xtra Vancouver publishes a comprehensive report on steroid use by gay and bisexual teens. Research shows gay and bi boys are nearly six times more likely to use steroids than straight teens.
‘It’s no different than getting my hair dyed,’ one user says.
• Out of a sample of 17,000 American teenagers, nearly six times as many gay and bisexual boys had used steroids as their straight counterparts according to a report by Xtra Vancouver.
• When Dr Aaron Blashill, a researcher and clinician at Massachusetts General Hospital, first saw how many American gay teenaged boys were using steroids, he assumed he had made an error.
• Gay and bisexual boys were also more likely to use steroids heavily: four percent said they had used more than 40 times, compared to only 0.7 percent among their straight peers.
• Body image and sex appeal: squeezed between two cultures that rank masculinity as a hot
commodity, gay and bisexual teens are turning to steroids to bulk up, and fit in.
