- Pelago, Inc. Matt Otepka, 206-855-7826 matt.otepka@104west.com or Jon Landers, 202-641-1148 jonlanders@pelago.com Whrrl, the location-aware social networking and discovery service from Pelago, Inc., today announced the release of a new Facebook application called "Been Here? Like it or Not?"
Powered by Whrrl's personalized discovery technology, the game is a fun way for Facebook users to show their friends that
they know all of the best places in their town and across the country. "Been Here? Like it or Not?" uses a map interface populated with various categories of local establishments which users then rate with one click. Users can also add the names of the friends who went to these places with them for future reference.
"We created 'Been Here? Like it or Not?' to give Facebook users a new way to share and compete with friends in their social network to see who has been to the most interesting places - from clubs to restaurants to coffee shops and more," said Jon Landers, senior vice president of marketing at Pelago. "Since the game draws its location information from Whrrl there are millions of places to choose, rate and share with friends, making it a great resource for discovering cool new hotspots in your city."
To start, users enter their location and select the category of places they want to rate. Relevant establishments in the area appear on the map, prompting users to indicate whether or not they like any particular places. Just like in Whrrl, highly-rated destinations are represented on the map as positively charged green icons, while negatively charged red icons denote those with poor ratings. Points are awarded for the places, categories and number of cities that users rate. The more places rated, the higher the users' individual scores.
In addition to moving through the ranks from "Tourist" to "A-List," users can also see their friends' maps, giving people a new way to use their social network to find new places to go. The map can be added to users' Facebook profile page to serve as a public display of the places users find interesting or not. "Been Here? Like it or Not?" is free and can be downloaded from the Facebook applications page.
In addition to the new Whrrl Facebook application, users can also keep up to date on Whrrl developments, applications and promotions through the Whrrl fan page on Facebook. Facebook users can friend the Whrrl page to keep on top of everything new from Whrrl.
Users interested in signing up for the full Whrrl experience should visit whrrl.com or point their mobile browser to whrrl.com. Whrrl is available across the entire U.S. market with deep location and event content provided for most major cities.
Whether on a mobile device or the Web, Whrrl users can share their activities including current location, opinions, notes and photos in real-time. Whrrl also provides a powerful filtering capability leveraging rich factual data - like cuisine type or hours of operation - alongside useful social data like friends' recommendations. Combining all of this information and activity with high-relevance suggestions, Whrrl creates a powerful new real-world discovery experience.
