Benefitfocus® is pleased to announce that the Wellness Council of America (WELCOA) has recognized the Company’s commitment to providing a healthy workplace with the “Well Workplace” Award. With this designation, Benefitfocus, the largest healthcare benefits software provider in the U.S., joins some of the largest and most prestigious organizations identified as one of America’s Healthiest Companies in 2009.
“Becoming a Well
Workplace is just one more testament to Benefitfocus’ unique corporate culture,” explained Bert Young, Benefitfocus CFO and SVP of corporate services. “Our wellness programs have increased morale while improving the overall health of our associates.”
The WELCOA “Well Workplace” Award recognizes four distinct levels and was only given to 59 U.S. companies this year. Presented with the Gold level, Benefitfocus has successfully developed comprehensive programs surrounding healthy habits producing measurable results. The programs Benefitfocus has instituted, such as the 12-week wellness incentive program called iGetFit/iWin, empower its associates to realize their personal and professional goals.
The Well Region of Charleston Steering Committee worked with Benefitfocus, among other companies, to obtain the national “Well Workplace” designation. Charleston-based Trident Health System facilitated the business-led initiative to offer WELCOA training and Quarterly “Well Workplace” Roundtable sessions to assure clear understanding of the model and implementation.
“Trident Health System has served as a partner to area employers who want to encourage their staff to make healthy lifestyle choices,” said Todd Gallati, president and CEO for Trident Health System. “It has been a privilege to assist Benefitfocus as they have worked towards the Wellness Council of America's recognition of their efforts."
Founded in 2000, Benefitfocus has kept workplace wellness on the forefront of its business initiatives by offering discounted gym memberships, on-site health risk assessments and biometric screenings for all associates. Moving its corporate headquarters to Daniel Island prompted the company to provide bicycles to tour the scenic landscape and ride in between the two Charleston, S.C., buildings. Benefitfocus has since added initiatives that include scheduled monthly walks, filtered water, on-site massages and treadmills equipped with computers – promoting walking while working. Lunch and Learn seminars are also available to the company’s associates on a variety of topics such as nutrition, stress relief and exercise.
“We are so proud to be distinguished by WELCOA as a Well Workplace,” stated Young. “From the inception of the Company we recognized that our associates are our most important asset.”
