Wedgewood Pharmacy : now is compounding implantable cisplatin beads using patented Matrix III™ drug-delivery technology under an exclusive license from Royer Animal Health : . According to Barbara Forney, VMD : , a practicing veterinarian and medical writer, cisplatin frequently is prescribed by equine veterinarians as a chemotherapy drug to treat equine skin tumors

such as sarcoids, spindle-cell tumors, squamous-cell carcinoma and melanoma.

Cisplatin beads using the Matrix III drug-delivery technology are 1.6mg each and dispensed three beads per vial for $75. Each of the spherical beads is about 3mm in diameter.

In common veterinary practice, cisplatin is injected directly into tumors in an emulsion of sterile sesame oil. Using the implantable bead-form of cisplatin may reduce the veterinarian’s exposure to the highly toxic medication, compared with the injection emulsion, while providing local therapy.

George J. Malmberg, R.Ph., F.A.C.A., F.A.C.V.P, the pharmacist president and CEO of Wedgewood Pharmacy said: “This new alliance with Royer Animal Health combines that company’s proprietary drug delivery technology with our stringent standards for preparing custom-made compounded medicines, which we believe will be of significant value to veterinarians.”

Dr. Gar Royer, CEO of Royer Animal Health added, “We have enormous confidence in the quality standards at Wedgewood Pharmacy, which is one of the largest compounding pharmacies in the nation. Its procedures comply with the strict USP <795> and <797> standards and every compounded preparation undergoes at least five pharmacist-checks before it is dispensed. Wedgewood Pharmacy is known nationally for the consistency of the medications it prepares.”
