Former PINK FLOYD rocker ROGER WATERS has written "tear down the wall" on the West Bank barrier at Bethlehem, during a trip to Israel and the Palestinian territories.
The bassist scrawled a number of messages including "no thought control" - a line from Pink Floyd hit ANOTHER BRICK IN THE WALL - in spray paint and marker pen on the concrete panels.
Waters, 61, said, "It's a horrific edifice, this thing. I've seen pictures of it, I've heard a lot about it but without being here you can't imagine how extraordinarily oppressive it is and how sad it is to see these people coming through these little holes. It's craziness." The wall is being built by Israel to keep out Palestinian suicide bombers, but has been criticised by Palestinians as an attempt to grab land and deemed illegal by the World Court because it crosses occupied territory.
Waters will perform in the Arab-Jewish peace village of Neve Shalom tonight (22JUN06), a repeat of his 1990 performance of Pink Floyd album THE WALL on the Berlin Wall, separating East and West Germany, following reunification of the country.
The rocker hopes he can play a part in the destruction of the West Bank barrier, adding, "It may be a lot harder to get this one down, but eventually it must happen."
