Washington Gas volunteers teamed up with the nonprofit organization, Barney Neighborhood House, and International Brotherhood of Teamsters, Local 96, for the 4 th Annual Project Weatherization on Saturday, Nov. 7. Project Weatherization is part of a continuous effort by Washington Gas to educate residents about energy efficiency and perhaps lower their heating bills during the winter months.
Each year, Washington Gas teams
with a local non-profit organization to identify area residents that require weatherization assistance in one of the company’s three service territories: the District of Columbia, Maryland or Virginia. This year Washington Gas worked with Barney Neighborhood House, a non-profit that serves the needs of senior and low-income residents in D.C.
More than 50 volunteers – employees, friends and family – spent the day weatherizing the homes of elderly D.C. residents. D.C. Ward Four Councilmember Muriel Bowser joined Washington Gas volunteers at a Ward Four home to show her support of Project Weatherization and help install weatherstripping at the residence.
“Washington Gas volunteers provided much-needed services to some of our older and less-fortunate neighbors,” said Edwinta Jenkins, Project Director for Barney Neighborhood House, “The efforts from Project Weatherization will help keep them warm this winter, and hopefully keep costs down, which is more important than ever.”
The following low-cost energy efficiency measures were installed by volunteers and are easy-to-do.
- Installation of plastic on windows
- Caulking around doors and windows
- Installation of weather stripping
- Installation of low-flow shower heads
- Installation of kitchen faucet aerator
- Installation of bathroom faucet aerators
- Application of clear glass patch tape on cracked windows
Residents also were provided with informational materials to help them conserve energy during the winter and seek out energy assistance, if necessary.
