I always tip the waiter or waitresses that provide great service. They usually make minimum wage so they rely on their tips to survive. However some waiters and waitresses think they deserve a tip. I disagree. A bad server will make the best meal you ever ate seem terrible. A great server will make the worst
meal you ever had more enjoyable. Let's talk about what the server customer relationship is. I think this is where the confusion starts when talking about tipping. When you go to a restaurant you are the customer buying and paying for a service. When you pay for a service you have to have expectations. If you go to a high class restaurant your expectations are higher. When you go to a lower class restaurant you expect a lower level of service. This is not how I look at this. No matter what restaurant you go to the server's job is to serve you. This means explaining the menu, knowing what the menu items are, serve you in a reasonable amount of time and being polite. Your job is to be courteous, be reasonable and pay for your meal. So what is all the fuss about. Don't lower the expectations of what service should be and reward good service. I rate tipping in this manner; quick service, polite and knowledgeable, nothing was forgot or missed deserves 15 %. Anything above this deserves 5% extra for each additional step that person made to make your experience better. Any thing below this does not deserve anything higher than 5 %. Remember that if the food was cooked or prepared poorly is also a reason to not tip well. They have to deliver the whole package.
Remember that tipping is a great way to say thank you and also a way to let the restaurant know that they did not achieve their objective.
