www.veryant.com - Veryant Sue Myers, 978-369-6336 pr@veryant.com Veryant, the COBOL and Java technology innovator, today introduced isCOBOL Application Suite 2008, the latest release of its software that enables comprehensive, cost-effective development, deployment, maintenance, and modernization of COBOL applications.

Veryant isCOBOL software protects and extends valuable application assets by blending the optimized, business-oriented nature of COBOL with the openness, portability, and power of the Java platform, without retraining staff or rewriting code. The isCOBOL Application Platform Suite (isCOBOL APS) provides a complete environment to develop, deploy, and modernize COBOL applications.

With an estimated 200 billion lines of COBOL code in use today, there is strong market demand for solutions that protect these investments. The isCOBOL environment delivers true portability,

easy extensibility, and allows the power and innovation of the Web to be easily merged with COBOL programs.

"This latest release includes several significant advances in the areas of thin client and GUI technology," said Alfredo Iglesias, vice president of business development for Veryant. "Enhancements have been made to isCOBOL Web Direct as well, bringing flexible design capabilities for Web 2.0 applications to be developed entirely in COBOL."

Since the isCOBOL Compiler and Runtime Environment are written 100% in Java, COBOL application designers can design one user interface and deploy it across many platforms, including AIX, HP-UX, Solaris, Linux, Windows and mainframe systems. Applications compiled with isCOBOL technology can even be deployed on hand-held devices like PDAs or smartphones ... any system supporting the Java Virtual Machine environment.

isCOBOL APS already includes support for ANSI-2002 features such as object-orientation and Unicode. With the addition of layout support in isCOBOL APS 2008, the same graphical resizing of windows that is expected and delivered by most Web applications today is now easily implemented for COBOL program end-users.

Other specific enhancements in isCOBOL APS 2008 include:

-- Optimized TCP/IP communications to improve performance and response time when running in isCOBOL Server thin client configurations.

-- Enhanced rich GUI controls, including support for sorting columns in the GRID control.

-- Additional Web 2.0 development features such as calendar date-entry, gain/lost focus event, keystroke functions, and accordion panel in isCOBOL Web Direct.

-- Improved printing capabilities, such as the ability to print both from the server and client side of a deployment.

isCOBOL APS 2008 is available now. Thin client and distributed processing functionality is included in the base isCOBOL runtime environment and current customers can change operating system platforms for no additional fee. Additional enhancements to isCOBOL APS will be introduced in the coming months.
