2008-11-12 10:29:13 - The quest to fuel the nation's vehicles with non-traditional fuels has reached new levels of ingenuity, according to feedback from visitors to Budget Van Insurance's website.

Chip fat and cooking oil are the first choice of tradesmen and women looking to cut down on fuel prices in a bid to beat the credit crunch; with almost 60% of van drivers considering using alternative fuels to power the nation's small business fleet.

With a whopping 72% of van drivers claiming they would consider using a battery powered

van, if readily available, they are clearly keen on utilising new technology, as well as some more obscure ways to keep their vehicles on the road!

Bizarrely, some visitors to the site state they have used ‘kangaroo oil' and ‘apples' to keep their machines jumping and bobbing along on the UK highways!! Rising fuel costs over the last year, account for 55% of those looking at other ways to power their vehicles.

Mnveer Arkan, Head of Marketing, Budget Van Insurance says:
'The feedback on our website shows the entrepreneurial ways in which tradesman and women are looking to save money and we applaud their, sometimes unusual, efforts to help keep small businesses alive in the UK.

'Clearly there is demand for battery powered vans and if manufacturers can build easily accessible, economically viable vans then there is no doubt that they'll be embraced by tradesmen.'
