signonsandiego.com - Union-Tribune Sid Shapira, 619-293-1009 Cell: 858-926-8695 Not once, but twice, the Union-Tribune had to fire up the presses to meet reader demand for its newspaper, following the historic Nov. 4 election.

Typically, the Union-Tribune sells 30,000 Wednesday single copies. In anticipation of today's news, 60,000 copies were printed in advance - but even that was not enough.

With demand escalating, at 12:30 p.m., the Union-Tribune printed another 20,000 newspapers, which quickly sold out. At 4:30 p.m., an additional 20,000 newspapers were printed. In total, 100,000 Union-Tribune newspapers were printed for single copy sales.

"The demand for the newspaper demonstrates not only the magnitude of the election's outcomes, but the firm place newspapers have in today's environment," said Drew Schlosberg, community and public relations director.

Copies of the Union-Tribune from additional print runs were sold at retailers throughout the county and at the newspaper's office.

"The demand has been unbelievable," said Schlosberg. "As soon as the second run came off the presses, those newspapers quickly sold out and people were asking where they could get additional copies - and our online traffic saw a huge spike as well."

Page views to the newspaper's Web site, SignOnSanDiego.com, were up 155 percent from a typical weekday.

The Union-Tribune Publishing Co., established in 1868, is San Diego County's leading local media company, with products reaching more than 62 percent of all San Diegans each week. The San Diego Union-Tribune, serving San Diego County, has late week circulation of 323,464, with more than 759,000 readers; Sunday circulation is 355,537, with readership of more than 935,000. The newspaper's Web site, SignOnSanDiego.com, is the leading online source for local news, entertainment information and classifieds in San Diego, with more than 35 million page views and 3.2 million unique users in a typical month. Other products include Enlace, the weekly Spanish-language news publication with the largest distribution in San Diego County, and Today's Local News, which distributes more than 66,000 copies in north San Diego County.
