UK start up mobile operator offers best value Pay-As-You-Go terms
LONDON
The UK's newest kid on the block in the mobile phone industry has torn up the rule book and offering the cheapest rates for domestic and overseas calls on the one SIM card with low cost broadband access.
StanMobile have moved in so quickly to the market they are still working on the company website, but their phone service is being rolled out, and it works with prices that will shake up the big operators.
Up till now, the market for those wanting to make calls to other countries, especially third world ones, was limited to the cheap phone cards which could be purchased in local shops, "access" numbers which are normally the 0870 variety or others such as Lebara which gave
cheap calls overseas, but domestic calls were mostly expensive.
Now comes along a new operator with low cost overseas calls, for example to call the Philippines from the UK is 7p to landlines and 8p to cellphones. What sets StanMobile apart is that UK domestic calls are 3p to landlines and 5p to mobiles, and this is on the one SIM card. Customers can also transfer their existing mobile number over.
And if that was not enough, they have stormed into the mobile broadband market with £9.99 a month for 3GB. Again, with no contracts; as long as there is that amount available on the SIM , a free call to their service center gets the customer on line.
We have tested the system, the calls are what they say on the tin, the prices match what is advertised, and the broadband access is fast. Also, having an 02 dongle at hand, we placed the StanMobile SIM card in and it worked immediately, and picked up faster. We haven't tried it in other dongles, but as they appear to be generic, there is no reason to suppose they would not.
Pay-as-you-go customers in the UK generally pay more, whether it is for domestic calls, and certainly for mobile broadband access. With this new company offering domestic and foreign calls along with broadband access at affordable rates for the pay-as-you-go market, the mobile phone business in the UK looks set for a shake up it deserves.
