TWO SOFTWARE ENGINEERS WHO PLAN TO SAVE KIDS’ LIVES WITH AN INTELLIGENT CAR SEAT

Print article Print article
2013-03-02 18:41:22 - Safe Kid Seat is a special device that equips a car seat and car with temperature sensors that can detect when the temperature in the car becomes too hot or too cold.

In August of last summer, one of the hottest summers on record, USA Today published an article reporting the deaths of eight children who died in their parents’ hot cars within the span of one week. In 2012, 23 children died of hypothermia after being left unattended in automobiles. Inspired by the tragedy of this story, the concept of Safe Kid Seat was born. Matthew Mack and Ryan Kanzeg are the men, and fathers, behind this new innovative device that can turn a regular car seat into an intelligent car seat that can save a child’s life.

If a child is left unattended and the temperature becomes abnormal, a signal will be sent via text message or phone alert to

anyone who has been listed in the directory of the device. This means a parent standing in a long lineup at the bank machine or the supermarket can be notified and can leave to ensure their child is safe. If there is no response after a certain period of time, the police are notified of the situation and a GPS location for the vehicle is given to them.

The Safe Kid Seat device can do more than simply check the temperature. There are a number of sensors that are installed in the car and on the car seat that can detect whether the child is in the seat, whether the seatbelt has become unclasped, and even whether the car is running. If something changes in the environment of the car while the child is left unattended, the parent or guardian will be alerted.

Mack and Kanzeg are both software engineers with the skills and experience to design Safe Kid Seat. They are the masterminds behind the concept. As Ryan Kanzeg puts it, “Our goal is to create an affordable product that can prevent tragedies. This is an opportunity for us to put our software development knowledge to use for a good cause.” Mack and Kanzeg have already designed the device and have a working prototype. They are now at the stage of fine tuning and testing the device in a variety of situations.

In discussing the product with vendors and sourcing the raw materials for the Safe Kid Seat device, it has become evident that the project has to be funded in order to turn the prototype into something that can be massed produced. For this, Mack and Kanzeg are turning to people like them, people who have children in their lives, people who want to make a difference.
