The carnival actually takes place over several weeks, leading up to the Parade of the Bands that are the main events on Carnival Monday and Carnival Tuesday, which in 2014 fall on the 3rd and 4th of March. Among the most significant events leading up to the main band parades are Dimanche Gras, J'Ouvert and the ever popular Monday Night Mas.
The carnival period is an absolute festival of sound and music, with
the local population flooding the streets along with thousands of visitors from all around the world. The main parades and events are centred on the islands' capital of the Port of Spain, but parties and other celebrations can be found in streets, towns and villages all across Trinidad and Tobago, and indeed throughout the entire Caribbean region.
The Trinidad carnival can claim inspiration for other events globally that are now part of the annual event lexicon - iconic parade events such as the Sydney Mardi Gras, Mardi Gras Parade in New Orleans' French Quarter and the summer Notting Hill Carnival in London, England all have their roots in the original Caribbean carnival tradition. If you are going, prepare your senses for an absolute cavalcade of sound and noise that will live long in your memory!
