2008-09-17 03:53:36 - Convenient at-home, on-location courses will train working memory, attention, focus

Total Learning Centers (TLC) is enhancing its adult curriculum and offering four new programs. Wexford-based TLC, an academic, brain-based learning facility, has always served age 5 through adult, but with an increased demand and research showing the success of adult programs, TLC is gearing up for additional adult students.

TLC's new programs are designed for working adults with convenient evening

hours and at-home courses. Each course focuses on improving different executive functioning skills - such as processing speed, attention, working memory, and auditory processing.

'These skills are essential to our everyday lives. Executives, sales people, teachers, even stay-at-home parents can benefit from improved memory and auditory processing,' said Executive Director Dr. Carol Utay, 'and often adults don't know where to turn or what options exist to help them improve.

As with all of TLC's programs, an initial consultation is recommended to determine what program best fits students' needs. Instead of on-site testing TLC offers for younger students, the center is offering a 45-minute phone consultation for adults to determine the most appropriate program match.

Three of the new programs are Web-based and offered at home. The program offered on-site is one of TLC's most popular programs for children, now offered in an adult class. PACE, taught by master instructor Sandy Tommarello, M.Ed., CCC/SLP, targets processing and cognitive enhancement. In only eight weeks, Adult PACE improves five areas of the brain's executive function necessary for learning: attention, working memory, processing speed, visual processing and auditory processing. Classes are held two times a week at TLC's Wexford and Fox Chapel locations.

Other programs include: Brain Fitness, designed for auditory processing training and improving the quality and quantity of the information the brain absorbs from the ears; InSight, a visual processing training program that works to improve the quality and quantity of the information the brain absorbs from the eyes; and Cogmed, a renowned, evidence-based program for helping adults improve attention by training working memory. TLC is currently the only certified provider in Pennsylvania of the Cogmed program. Cogmed Working Memory Training was developed in Sweden at one of Europe's leading medical institutes. To become a certified provider, individuals must go through special training, and only a physician or psychologist can oversee of the program.
