A laptop IT donation can help many people in Africa
2008-11-03 11:27:29 - End of lifecycle IT equipment from the UK has helped many thousands of
people in Africa gain access to computers thanks to a partnership between Tier 1 Asset Management & their charity partner, Digital Links International. http://www.tier1.com

Computers donated by Tier 1's clients are used in schools, hospitals and community centres' providing vastly improved educational and economic opportunities and access to a wealth of information. In schools, each donated computer is used by an average of 25 students each week.
Tier 1's association with Digital Links provides an easy, reliable and cost-effective way to donate redundant computers for re-use in developing countries and is an integral part of the Tier 1 ethical disposal process.
Tier 1 offers a unique 'zero cost solution' for companies wishing to donate end of lifecycle IT equipment to charity. Jon Selby, marketing manager for Tier 1 explains, 'The effects of legislation such as WEEE and Data Protection have made it nigh on impossible

for companies simply to donate old desktops and laptops, but by engaging Tier 1 to ensure data security and environmental compliance before equipment is passed on to the intended recipients, corporate organisations can be assured of vital CSR points and regulatory peace of mind in a cost neutral way.'
As one would expect of an organisation with strong ethical values, Tier 1's principles mirror those of many Corporate Social Responsibility departments within UK businesses. Jon Selby adds, 'Many companies recognise the importance of ethical consumerism - the increase in people buying from organisations with strong ethical policies - and the priceless 'good news' PR created by donations to charities and local groups that generate new commercial opportunities, competitive advantage and a better brand image.'
Digital Links work in developing countries, through a network of carefully selected distribution partners. They ensure that the PCs are properly installed and supported with training and educational content. digital-links.org
Furthermore, in conjunction with Tier 1's clients, Digital Links has put systems in place in Africa to ensure that all machines are recycled once they reach the end of their useful life. They are taking the lead in addressing this important issue.
