In 2007, Thrivent Financial members performed 100,000 grassroots volunteer activities, raising and donating $178 million, while Thrivent Financial multiplied this funding with an additional $142.6 million in direct contributions to communities, nonprofit organizations and Lutheran institutions. Thrivent Financial members are organized into 1,357 local groups, called chapters, to plan and execute benevolent, social and educational activities.
"Millions of lives are touched each year by Thrivent Financial for Lutherans members who see a need in their congregations and communities and respond with action," said Bruce Nicholson, Thrivent Financial's chairman, president and chief executive officer. "Whether the cause is big or small--stocking a food bank, helping a family with catastrophic medical bills, or providing a Lutheran Bible camp with a fresh coat of paint--Thrivent Financial members come together to do good."
All Thrivent Financial members belong to a local chapter that provides a way for them to connect with one another for social or educational events, as well as give back to their communities, congregations and causes they care about. Members use Thrivent Financial dollars to raise additional money, purchase materials for service projects and energize members and other volunteers to provide help that otherwise would not be available.
In the fall of 2005, Thrivent Financial for Lutherans announced a four-year, $105 million commitment to Habitat for Humanity. Through the alliance (now grown to $125 million), Thrivent Financial and Habitat for Humanity work together with families in need to build simple, decent, affordable homes. Last year, Thrivent Financial volunteers also built 346 houses through the Thrivent Builds Homes programs and 210 houses through the Thrivent Builds Worldwide program for a total of 556 homes for families in need. Each day, on average, Thrivent Financial members participate in more than 270 volunteer activities through their local chapters that deliver help to causes they care about.
"We are grateful that Thrivent Financial members choose to work with us and through us each day to improve their lives and the lives of others in their communities," said Nicholson. "We are excited to assist our members in demonstrating their care for others."
