New York, NY March 2, 2007 - Thinc Design is pleased to announce the opening on March 9, 2007 of 'The Ancient Americas,- a permanent exhibit at the Field Museum in Chicago. This new exhibition, occupying 19,000 square feet of exhibit space, explores the history of the inhabitants of the New World from the advent of the first human beings
through the arrival of Europeans in the late 15th Century.
'The Ancient Americas- displays more than 2,200 Native American artifacts from the Field Museum's vast archaeological collections. Thinc Design situated these artifacts within period reconstructions which are interspersed with many interactive displays and videos, inviting visitors to become immersed in the civilizations and cultures of our ancestors. 'This exhibition is really a story of cultural evolution it's about us, and about the motivation we share with all cultures from the past and present,- said Tom Hennes, Founder and Creative Director of Thinc Design. 'We designed the exhibition so that the societies and cultures of the past serve as a mirror that we can look into, to better see and understand our own lives today.-
Visitors can move around within the space to discover different perspectives of individual artifacts, explore the exhibition's rich content and interact with other visitors. 'The Ancient Americas- features the unique histories of several dozen of the many thousands of ancient cultures that dotted the landscape of the Americas from the Arctic Circle to the tip of South America.
The exhibition resulted from a close collaboration between Thinc Design and the Field Museum. The team included Thinc's Tom Hennes and Ricardo Mulero, Senior Designer; the Field Museum's Jonathan Hass, Archaeologist and Lead Curator for 'The Ancient Americas,- David Foster, Project Management Director, as well as curatorial assistants, exhibit developers, project managers, information technology staff, conservators and administrators.
'The design of 'The Ancient Americas- was tremendously challenging and rewarding,- said Tom Hennes. 'Our goal was to enable and motivate the public to delve into the stories of our ancient past, and to discover connections between the archaeological evidence and our own cultures. We are delighted to have had this opportunity to create a new permanent exhibition for one of the world's most prestigious cultural institutions.-
The project required a complete renovation of two of the Field Museum's permanent galleries, as well as part of a third gallery. Thinc Design coordinated this work with the architectural firm of CATH Associates. 'The Ancient Americas- features a significant entrance element that extends to Stanley Field Hall, the Field Museum's beautiful central architectural space. Thinc's scope of work included planning and design of all the exhibition spaces.
