On Monday, March 17th, 2014, The Thomas A. Dorsey Project will launch its Crowdsourcing & Fundraising Campaign which is committed to protecting the image, works, and reputation of Thomas A. Dorsey.

Thomas A. Dorsey, the most prolific innovator of gospel music, published over four-hundred blues and gospel songs. As a young man, Dorsey lived the life of a renowned contemporary entertainer. Known as Georgia Tom throughout the Roaring Twenties, Dorsey was a successful pianist, composer and arranger for Paramount Records, and he toured with, among others, Paramount recording artist, Gertrude “Ma” Rainey, as leader of her band, the Wildcats Jazz Band.

After triumphing over tragedy and personal adversity, Dorsey left secular music to return to his religious roots and devoted his

talent to spiritual fulfillment. One of Dorsey’s most known and performed songs is “Take My Hand, Precious Lord,” which was sung beautifully by the soulful Mahalia Jackson and was a personal favorite of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The likes of Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Aretha Franklin, Red Foley and many other recording artists have recorded and performed songs written by Dorsey.

Dorsey was among the first to effectively combine evangelical testimony and hymnal melodies with idioms of blues tonality which bore a distinct heartfelt and soul stirring character that he coined as gospel music. In its early days Dorsey’s music was considered too secular, and it was rejected in religious circles because of its resemblance to the blues. Sustained by his passion for his music, and his belief in its message, Dorsey persevered and eventually earned the acceptance of the community.

In 1933, he founded the National Convention of Gospel Choirs and Choruses (http://www.ncgccinc.com), which provided the budding art form institutional status and created a market for the music Dorsey wrote, published and sold. Also known as the Thomas A. Dorsey Convention, it is the oldest and longest running gospel convention in the world. Dorsey’s grandson, Thomas A. Dorsey III, is currently spearheading the Thomas A. Dorsey Project to preserve the legacy of his beloved grandfather by transforming his life story into a manuscript and beyond.

This project is the first step in an endeavor to increase awareness of Thomas A. Dorsey’s contributions to the rich tapestry of American culture and expose new generations of singers, songwriters, musicians and music lovers over the world to his works. The manuscript is tentatively scheduled to be finalized for printing with a February 2015 targeted special release for nonprofits and educational institutions, and a July 2015 release for Thomas A. Dorsey’s 116th birthday observance. All funds received will assist in facilitating logistics such as research, writing, editing, artistic design and licensing necessary to complete a factually based narrative of Dorsey’s life.
