The US company has accepted the country's request to remove 12 clips on video-sharing website YouTube - owned by Google Inc. - that were interpreted as mocking their revered king.
The government blocked access to YouTube on April 4 and threatened to sue the company on charges of lèse majesté - an offence against the monarchy - if they did not agree to take the clips down.
Vissanu Meeyoo, from the Ministry of Information and Communications Technology, said: 'We decided not to sue Google because it has agreed to cooperate in removing 12 video clips from the YouTube website.' One clip features pictures of feet over King Bhumibol Adulyadej's image, which is a cultural taboo in Thailand as feet are considered dirty and offensive. The footage also uses the Thai national anthem as its soundtrack In a letter to the ministry, Google wrote: 'We have the deepest respect for His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej. We likewise respect Thailand's law and tradition and hope that we will be able to reach a mutually acceptable resolution to the current controversy.' In Thailand the issue of insulted the highly respected 79-year-old monarch is taken very seriously.
In March, a Swiss man was jailed for 10 years after he admitted drunkenly spraying graffiti across posters of the king.
