Ilford County Court was the unlikely setting for case involving the Marcos family, QPR and a host of dodgy finance deals
Ilford County Court was the unlikely setting for case involving the Marcos family, QPR and a host of dodgy finance deals

There was a court case in a small suburban London court which ordinarily would pass totally by most people, and would certainly never attract the attention of the media.

County courts in the UK are for the mundane matters of child custody hearings, orders to repay debts and landlord evictions. Dramas in themselves for the participants but not the stuff of banner headlines such as the Enron fraud case.

This one was different as it involved a Filipina who has variously claimed to be the illegitimate or adopted daughter of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos, using this story to borrow money on a large scale or get "investments", a disgraced former British lawyer who was jailed in the 1990's over theft of

clients money and Queens Park Rangers football club among other things.

Helena Skeggs has been scalping fellow Filipinos in southern England for several years. Having as her "legal advisor" disgraced and struck former solicitor Philip Englefield doesn't do her reputation any good.

Ordered to appear at Ilford's County Court to be examined over unpaid debts, Skeggs decided to stay away.

Possibly Skeggs did not wish to demean herself by driving her silver Mercedes to the distinctly drab surroundings of Ilford. Certainly parking is a problem around the vicinity of the court. That may be the reason. We shall probably not know for some time what excuse Mr Englefield made for her non-appearance as it was a closed hearing, and Mr Englefield did not wish to speak to the press as exited the court building. In fact, as can be seen from the video, for a man of his advanced years who is almost certainly holding, or should be able to hold, a senior citizens free bus pass, he is remarkably fleet of foot.
