With Green Building certification becoming the unofficial norm transforming the urbanscape aided by increasing number of energy efficiency, water, waste and efficient resource management initiatives employed in projects across the real estate sector, it is apparent that ‘sustainability’ is here to stay.

With bodies like the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) and The Energy Research Institute (TERI) amongst others spearheading the Green Building movement in India over the last decade, their rating green rating systems have helped to measure and enhance the sustainability of built structures. The process is driven by an integrated approach that requires all stakeholders, from the project proponents, to those who implement and mediate the process to have necessary ‘Green’ know-how and integrate environmental efficiency from

start to finish of a project. With renewed thrust on the need for sustainability in our urban lives today, there is a growing need for appropriately trained and skilled professionals in the various related fields of this sector.

Surmount Energy Solutions Pvt. Ltd. belongs to the new breed of “Green Companies” that is endowed with an accomplished team of sustainability experts, with wide ranging expertise and experience in Green Building projects across the world. Laying emphasis on the need for a sustainability perspective throughout the life of a structure, Surmount’s CEO, Mr. Balbir Singh Khera says, “We are uniquely differentiated from other companies in this space through our ability to enable buildings that are not only designed to be green, but ones that operate as green throughout their lifecycle. The breadth of our capabilities allows us to reach from Design to Building Operation The organisation has come to recognize the changing horizons of sustainability measures in the industry today and the corresponding need for appropriately equipped “Green Collar Professionals

The IGBC AP (Accredited Professional) is one such professional certification offered by IGBC. The certification is founded on the knowledge of Green Building principles and strategies and is available through the qualification of an online examination hosted by the body which enables qualified as well as budding workers of the real estate to enhance their skills set as well as professional credentials. With roughly 1,112 IGBC APs listed in the country today, and given the fast paced growth of India’s Green Building footprint (currently 1.65 Billion sq. ft. roughly), it is clear that there is room and need for more.

Surmount began its education endeavour with its own employees about whom Mr. Khera says, “Having sustainability professionals who are accredited by global agencies allows us to deliver greater value to our clients who are looking for expert guidance on their projects that are going Green Today, the Surmount Training Centre (STC) has added a new dimension of Education and Training to Surmount’s “Green profile” through its Knowledge Initiative. “There is a vacuum in practical training for sustainability in the industry today. The idea behind STC is introduce that very knowledge bank to students and professionals through the real-world application of Surmount’s experience in Green says Mr. Khera. The Centre provides a launch-pad to students and professionals alike for kick-starting a career that is in line with their careers whilst adding a new dimension of a sustainability skill-set and knowledge background in ‘Green

These courses are founded on Surmount’s bank of project and applicatory expertise in sustainability and their own experience in designing their USGBC certified Platinum rated Green Headquarters in Navi Mumbai. Apart from interactive seminars that draw from the IGBC repository of Green Rating systems and the latest software and techniques being used in the industry today, the training also includes case studies to add the element of practical real-world application. Having trainers who are themselves certified by bodies like IGBC or USGBC brings the necessary relevance to the course as pointed out by Monali Patil, an alumnus of the STC course and GM at a leading real estate firm in Mumbai, who felt that the best part about the course is that “it is taught by people working on live projects Some batches also hosted people from backgrounds as varied as marketing, such as Vikram Renake who found the course materials and training methodology of the useful in understanding the ‘concept of Green Buildings

Having worked with developers and students on such knowledge building exercises in the past, Surmount is not new to training. One such initiative was a training internship conducted with the students of BITS Pilani, who reminisced, “Surmount actually practices what it preaches". From day one of training at Surmount, we could see how passionate they are about Green. Everyone from the CEO, Mr. Khera and our trainers are passionate about what they do, and their energy is infectious The approach and intention of these courses has been applauded by participants such as Swati Joshi, an architect in Mumbai. In this emerging and dynamic ‘Green Real Estate organisations as well as professionals will benefit from multi-faceted problem solving and management tactics that shall serve as comprehensive solutions to existing and emerging challenges of urbanisation.
