DVLA revokes lorry driver's licence for ten years

The DVLA has told a lorry driver who was given an epileptic drug that he will not be able to drive for ten years. Because of this decision by the DVLA a driver's livelihood has been put on hold, until he can persuade the DVLA that he is fit to drive.

Chris Perrin has

been an HGV driver for the same company for twenty six years, when he slipped from the side of his lorry in March, he suffered a fractured skull and injured his shoulder and ribs, upon release from hospital he was prescribed the Pfizer drug Phenytoin to prevent any seizures that may occur, thinking that he would continue to drive his lorry.

However after informing the DVLA, he was shocked to hear that according to the DVLA rules he would not be able to drive for ten years because of taking this medication.

Mr Perrin said: "I've never had a seizure and was given Phenytoin because it would prevent me from having any.

"I could understand if it was one year, but 10 seems over the top. It's left me distraught."

"I hope I can at least keep my car licence, so I can drive vans and do parcel deliveries,"

But a DVLA spokeswoman said: "Drivers of Group 2 vehicles (above 3.5 tonnes) are subject to more stringent health standards than those required for Group 1. A Group 2 driver who suffers a serious head injury may have their entitlement revoked or refused."

"Return to driving will depend on specialist assessment and clinical recovery."

A Pfizer spokesman says: "The DVLA has its own criteria for deciding on fitness to drive in patients on any type of anti-epileptic medication."
