The Center for Health Value Innovation (www.vbhealth.org), the nation's premier organization dedicated to establishing value and producing evidence for sustainable health and financial improvement, is pleased to announce that A. Mark Fendrick, M.D., professor of Internal Medicine in the School of Medicine and professor of Health Management and Policy in the School of Public Health at the University of Michigan,

and Jan Berger, former chief clinical officer of CVS Caremark and current president and CEO of Health Intelligence Partners, will be joining the Center's Board of Strategic Advisors.

"The Center is fortunate to attract thought-leaders of this caliber and experience," says Cyndy Nayer, president of the Center. "Both Dr. Fendrick and Dr. Berger were early advocates of the value-based approach to controlling the cost trend by reducing pharmaceutical co-payments for those with chronic diseases in order to increase compliance, health, and productivity."

Fendrick, who serves as co-director of the Center for Value-Based Insurance Design at the University of Michigan (www.vbidcenter.org), brings significant experience in monitoring medical trends as they impact the nation's health care system and provides insight and guidance to the Center. He received a bachelor's degree in economics and chemistry from the University of Pennsylvania and a medical degree from Harvard Medical School.

"I am honored to serve this organization which reflects some of the most advanced thinking in value-based design," says Fendrick. "This is an opportunity to extend my perspective and understanding of clinical and economic issues that foster collaborations with government agencies, health plans, professional societies, and healthcare companies to advance value-based health design."

Berger is transitioning out of her role as the chief clinical officer of CVS Caremark, where she served since 1999. She founded Health Intelligence Partners in 2008 as a health care consultancy with 25 years of business and clinical experience. She holds a Doctor of Medicine degree and a Master's degree in Jurisprudence from Loyola University in Chicago.

Both Berger and Fendrick will join the distinguished panel of special strategic advisors, which includes Robert Campbell of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and Joycelyn Elders, M.D., former U.S. Surgeon General.
