2008-08-07 23:57:30 - The Capitol Steps put the 'Mock' in Democracy at the Schauer Center
Just in time for the 2008 Presidential election, The Capitol Steps comes to the Schauer Arts & Activities Center in Hartford. Performing on Saturday, September 13, 2008 at 3:00 and 7:30 pm, The Capitol Steps never have a shortage of material, no matter who holds office.
The Capitol Steps dig into the headlines of today, creating song parodies and skits with
a special brand of humor. They began as a group of Senate staffers who set out to satirize the very people and places that employed them. Ronald Reagan was President when the group began, so Steps co-founders Elaina Newport, Bill Strauss, and Jim Aidala figured that if entertainers could become politicians, then politicians could become entertainers.
Now 27 years later, The Capitol Steps have recorded 28 albums and have performed over 5,000 shows in 48 states. They've been featured on NBC, CBS, ABC, and PBS, and can be heard four times a year on National Public Radio stations nationwide during their Politics Takes a Holiday radio specials.
'Typically the Republicans goof up and the Democrats party. Then the Democrats goof up and the Republicans party. That's what we call the two-party system,' says Elaina Newport. Whether it's 'Korea' (to West Side Story's 'Maria') or the patriotic American in 'God Bless My SUV,' The Capitol Steps are equal opportunity offenders.
Tickets to The Capitol Steps are $31 / $27 for adults and $28 / $24 for students. Tickets can be purchased at the Schauer Center Box Office Monday-Friday from 11:30 am to 5:30 pm at 147 N. Rural Street in Hartford, charge by phone at 262-670-0560, ext. 3, or online at SchauerCenter.org.
