PARIS -- (Marketwire) -- 03/27/13 -- Tennis fans around the world will be focusing their attention on Paris as the countdown to Roland-Garros 2013 brings excitement and enthusiasm to the city; and those fortunate enough to witness the games first hand book nearby Paris hotels : www.marriott.com/hotels/local-things-to-do/pardt-paris-marriott- .. in upscale neighborhoods for a legendary tennis experience.

This year's French Open, which runs May 21 through June 9, is expected to bring hundreds of thousands of spectators to witness the endless matches and qualifying rounds, and participate in the variety of entertainment that surrounds the event. Providing travelers with a grand opportunity to take in exceptional tennis and enjoy the breathtaking beauty of Paris, the five-star accommodations of the Paris Marriott Hotel Champs Elysees are just four miles from the stadium with private and public transportation readily available.

Taunting enthusiasts since the late 19th century, French tennis has captivated the hearts of many, evolving into one of the most beloved sporting events in the world. While originally reserved for members of French clubs, tennis in Paris was first held in 1891 on the courts of Stade Francais Club. Women's singles were added six years later and it was not until 1925 that the French Tennis Federation created the French Internationals by opening the event to foreign players, alternately hosting the event at Stade Francais and the Racing Club de France until the Roland-Garros stadium was completed in 1928.

Beckoning fans to the city and the comfort of a fine Paris hotel near historic attractions such as Arc de Triomphe and the Louvre Museum, each year this legendary sporting event draws the best of the best, reminiscent of the days when The French Musketeers pulled off one of the biggest shocks of 20th century tennis. Claiming the coveted Davis Cup on American soil, the foursome set up a Paris rematch in 1928, thus requiring a stadium worthy of the contest. A donation by Stade Francais of three hectares of land near Porte d'Auteuil to the French Tennis Federation made it possible to construct a new stadium. The stadium was named after the historic clubs' famed Roland-Garros, a beloved member and aviation pioneer who had died 10 years earlier. Roland-Garros is most remembered for his Sept. 23, 1913 flight over the Mediterranean.

Helping the exciting new event establish itself as part of the international tennis scene, the Musketeers held on to the coveted Davis Cup for another five years before giving it up in 1933. Following a six year lapse during World War II, Roland-Garros emerged into a Golden Era during post-war years as tennis grew immensely in popularity.
