"novel" and "quite positive."
Conducted in December and January by industry authority Telcordia, the comprehensive cryptography assessment found zero exposures that pose a risk to the security of the content protection system. In addition, helping developers make the technology even stronger, the study identified some "minor" concerns that Secustream is now quickly moving to address for future technology versions.
"Nothing is more important to us than the integrity of our technology. These results show we are indeed paving the way to a piracy-free future for the streaming digital media experience," said Gisle Ostereng, Secustream founder and CEO. "We believe that when content owners and studios have confidence in the reliability of their content protection system, set-top and other system providers and distributors will be able to negotiate better contracts, ultimately giving people access to more entertainment choices over more platforms at lower costs."
Called SecuShow(TM), Secustream's patent-pending system is designed to prevent piracy before it can happen. The technology assigns a series of completely random media keys to each second of digital content being streamed via PCs, IPTV or other pay-per-view and on-demand set-top systems. Unlike competitive technologies, the SecuShow access keys have no relationship to each other and are streamed separately on a low-bandwidth connection from a security server. The result: Digital content becomes impervious to automated attacks and simply too difficult and too time-consuming for a person to hack.
"Secustream Technologies has addressed all known state-of-the-art cryptographic attacks and used all necessary state-of-the-art cryptographic algorithms and tools," the Telcordia report says. "The fact that no exposures were found during the cryptographic assessment is a clear sign of the competent design of the product."
The technology is being demonstrated this week in stand 81 in London at the IPTV World Forum, described as the world's leading event for the IPTV industry with more than 200 exhibitors, more than 7,000 expected attendees, and more than 400 speakers from telecoms, cable, satellite and mobile operators, and leading content owners. SecuShow is currently in customer trials, and the company is exploring further partnerships in the global PC, broadcast and IPTV space.
Telcordia is one of the world's foremost providers of software and services for IP, wireline, wireless and cable networks. According to the company, Telcordia is one of a select group of providers capable of performing the most sensitive security audits at the highest government levels and for global enterprises. Security expertise spans public networks, intranets, the Internet, wireless, network operations and services, including Web-based applications and e-commerce.
