The TCM Lifetime Achievement Award is given each year to a local individual who has gone above and beyond to serve the community at large over the course of his or her career. Recipients display commitment and leadership both in the field and within their company, fostering new ideas and encouraging creativity. The recipient also demonstrates generosity and compassion, making sure their work benefits others.

"During his career, Jim has catalyzed real transformation in the biotechnology sector, either through companies he has led or those he has financed," said Douglas A. Doerfler, chairman of TCM's MdBio Division : ctt.marketwire.com/?release=989749&id=2661715&type=1& .. and president and CEO of MaxCyte : ctt.marketwire.com/?release=989749&id=2661718&type=1& .. . "With an unmatched depth of curiosity, capacity to understand very complex science, and excellent leadership and business skills, Jim has been a high-level role model for scores of biomedical executives in the Mid-Atlantic region."

As a general partner at NEA, one of the world's largest venture capital firms, Dr. Barrett focuses on investing in healthcare technologies and therapeutics. Over the last decade, his portfolio -- which includes investments in companies such as Amicus Therapeutics, Clovis Oncology, CoGenesys, Inhibitex, Pharmion and Targacept -- has been among the most successful in the industry and resulted in his inclusion in the 2012 Forbes Midas List. His role at NEA is the capstone in a long career as a pioneering figure in the field of biotechnology, during which he worked with companies that focused on gene therapy, targeted cancer therapies, rare diseases and the first implantable glucose sensor. As an entrepreneur and manager in the biotech sector, Dr. Barrett founded Sensors for Medicine and Science (now Senseonics), developer of a revolutionary chemical sensing technology, and served on the board of biotechnology giant MedImmune for 18 years until its 2006 acquisition by AstraZeneca, one of the industry's largest M&A transactions. He also founded Genetic Therapy, and while leading Bethesda Research Labs merged with Gibco to form Life Technologies. Early in his career, Dr. Barrett worked in various divisions of SmithKline. He earned a Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of Tennessee, an M.B.A. from the University of Santa Clara, and a B.S. in chemistry from Boston College.

"It's been my privilege to work with many companies that have not only been founded, but flourished, in our region. And the Tech Council of Maryland's role as an advocate and partner for business and technology is a linchpin in that ecosystem," said Dr. Barrett. "An astonishing number of world-class biotechnology companies and groundbreaking advances in medical technology have sprung forth from our region, and entrepreneurial talent and capital are only part of the equation -- the industry owes a tremendous debt of gratitude to TCM."

Past recipients of the TCM Lifetime Achievement award include Freeman Hrabowski, president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), and Clifford M. Kendall, former chairman and CEO of Computer Data Systems Inc. (CDSI).
