TaylorCraft Cabinet Door Company has completely revamped the way they make cope and stick mullion cabinet doors, changing construction to half lap joints where the mullions intersect, and dovetail keys where the mullions meet the frame.
According to Marketing Director Heide Osborn, “The half-lap joint not only gives the cabinet door added strength where the mullions meet, but it looks beautiful, similar to the detail on a dovetail drawer box, and shows the cabinetmaker’s appreciation for craftsmanship.”
In a half-lap joint, mullions are notched where the pieces intersect and fully cross each other. The notches are equal depth so when they are mated with each other, their face surfaces remain flush.
TaylorCraft says they attach the mullions to the door frame on
90 degree intersections using a dovetail key (also known as a hammerhead key or butterfly spline) for strength and beauty. According to the company website, this type of joinery creates tight and perfectly aligned joints without the need for additional fasteners.
TaylorCraft defines a dovetail key as a small fastener with a dovetail on each end. The dovetail key is used to join two wood parts. In TaylorCraft’s case it joins the mullion to the door frame, by driving the dovetail key into a corresponding cut-out in each wood part.
“Whether our cope and stick mullion doors are open or closed, every part of the door is a beautiful addition to the cabinet, and the finished product is stunning,” says Osborn. “Dovetail joints have been a symbol of quality and craftsmanship in the woodworking industry for centuries.”
Standard cope and stick mullion cabinet doors are available within TaylorCraft Cabinet Door Company’s five day standard lead time. TaylorCraft’s complete selection of mitered and cope and stick cabinet doors can be viewed on their website at
