Already covering approximately 40 million units of vehicles over 83 regions of the country, the Russian Government's Emergency Response System is using GLONASS technology to provide rapid assistance to motorists in the event of a collision, without the need of deploying traffic police officers. This will lead to the arrival time of first responders to accident sites being cut by up to 30%. Furthermore, by 2015 all new approved M1 passenger and N1 commercial vehicles must be equipped with this technology with other vehicles types incorporating it by the fourth quarter of 2014.

Jonathan Newell has a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from Loughborough University. He has a particular interest in the development of vehicular and infrastructure communications to enhance road safety. He is also involved in projects in the CIS and speaks fluent Russian.
