With increasing multimedia requirements for in-vehicle-infotainment, Ethernet AVB provides higher bandwidth and more stable network management capabilities compared to Media Oriented System Transport (MOST) and Controller Area Network (CAN) standards. Symphony Teleca is showcasing its Ethernet AVB Stack running on three Texas Instruments Jacinto 5 reference platforms, networked through two Broadcom Polar switches at the 3rd Ethernet & IP @ Automotive Technology Day conference and exhibition at Filderhalle Leinfelden-Echterdingen, Germany, September 25 - 26, 2013. .All systems are interconnected with Broad-R-Reach single twisted pair Ethernet cabling. The system demonstrates the use of Ethernet AVB to transport three types of media important to automotive applications.
- Streaming of entertainment video using the MPEG-2 TS AVB mapping,
- A live camera feed using the Motion JPEG AVB mapping, and
- Live audio, using the new AVTP Audio mapping (aka Simple Audio Format) defined in the IEEE 1722a draft standard
Broadcom's BroadR-Reach automotive-qualified Ethernet solutions allow multiple in-vehicle systems to simultaneously access information over a single unshielded twisted pair cable at speeds of up to 100 Mbps. By eliminating cumbersome, shielded cabling, automotive manufacturers can reduce connectivity costs up to 80 percent and cabling weight up to 30 percent.
