Since being acquired by Jack Henry & Associates, Inc. in 2000, Symitar has grown exponentially and so has the workload of its technical publications department. Each year the company produces three large software updates, placing tremendous pressure on the 10-person team to keep up with product documentation changes. In the past, this has left little room for taking on strategic projects that could potentially add value for the customer and for Symitar. The company knew it was time to abandon its existing unstructured authoring system.

To address Symitar’s documentation challenges, the company moved to a structured authoring system using XMetaL Author Enterprise, which has empowered both technical and non-technical writers to create valid, structured XML content that can be shared and reused throughout the organization. Also, JustSystems allows Symitar authors to focus on small chunks of information rather than monolithic documents. This approach has reduced errors, cut costs, and saved time — freeing up team members to work on other projects for the company. Finally, by getting writers to accept JustSystems’ collaborative, bottom-up approach to documentation, Symitar’s documentation team has increased employee morale and enhanced its status across the company.
