LONG BEACH, Calif. – Members of the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) have elected Michelle Leonard of SCS Engineers to their International Board of Directors as Vice President. In this capacity, Ms. Leonard will continue to provide leadership and representation for the integrated solid waste industry, previously as Treasurer, and now as Vice President. She assumed her new position at the WASTECON® meeting in Dallas, Texas this week.
Leonard, Vice President and West Coast Director of Sustainable Materials Management for SCS Engineers, has 30 years of experience in environmental consulting and project management, with an emphasis in solid waste management planning and facilities. She has assisted public and private sector clients in the preparation of solid waste management
plans; designed and implemented waste reduction, recycling, and reuse programs; and identified opportunities to improve the cost-efficiency of existing solid waste reduction, reuse, and recycling efforts. Ms. Leonard, a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, has prepared plans and permits for transfer stations, material recovery facilities, and drop-off and buy-back centers. As part of these projects, she has helped clients with California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) assessments, facility permit applications, odor and dust control plans, and other support documents.
Ms. Leonard stated, “I am looking forward to my expanding role with the members of SWANA. The Association has positive environmental impact: contributing policy, technical representation, and covering all aspects of international integrated solid waste management.”
Leonard’s strong working knowledge of solid waste management regulations and practices has helped many city, county, and state regulators to manage successful and award winning projects. Michelle presents regularly at WASTECON and has been a member of SWANA since 2000. She is presently on the Southern California Founding Chapter Board of Directors. She is the Past Director of the Southern California Waste Management Forum and Past President of the Women’s Environmental Council.
