2014-03-26 13:46:00 - Hamirpur, 26 March 2014 : One of the largest nationwide surveys of hundreds of thousands of people all over India covering all the 543 MPs has revealed that Mr. Anurag Thakur, Lok Sabha Member of Parliament from Hamirpur constituency, is among the highest scoring MPs in the country. Mr. Thakur’s score of 7.66 is also ahead of the average 7.37 score of all MPs from Himachal Pradesh. Mr. Anurag Thakur is also the National Youth President of the BJP, and was recently selected as a Young Global Leader 2014 by World Economic Forum, Geneva. Earlier, Mr. Thakur has also featured in the ‘FT 25 Indians to Watch’ list.

The people rated only 17 per cent of the total 543 MPs in India as above average with a score of 6.67 or more. The survey was conducted by Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR), which was established in 1999 by a group of IIM professors to improve governance and strengthen democracy through electoral and political reforms. ADR is headed by founder trustee Prof. Trilochan Sastry who teaches Quantitative Methods and Information Systems and Social Entrepreneurship at IIM Bangalore. ADR conducted the survey in association with CNN-IBN to assess MP’s report cards.

Voters were asked to mark their MPs on a scale of 10 for each of the 30 governance parameters including better employment opportunities, drinking water, better roads, better hospitals

and primary healthcare centres, better electric supply, better schools and better public transport.

Anurag’s performance in the survey is also in line with the official statistics of PRS Legislative Research (PRS) which tracks Members of Parliament (MPs) and Members of Legislative Assemblies (MLAs) across party lines to provide independent and non-partisan research. PRS data shows that Mr. Anurag Thakur’s performance has been the best among all young MPs in the 15th Lok Sabha. With 85% attendance in Parliament, he has played an active and constructive role by raising 612 questions in the parliament compared to the national average of 300, and has participated in 72 debates as compared to the national average of 37.9. He has also introduced a private members bill in the parliament.

Ever since he was elected to the Parliament, Mr. Thakur has been actively representing Himachal Pradesh at a national level and has raised issues related to construction of railway lines and roads, expansion of airports, setting up of ‘National Board for the Development of Himalayan States’, opening of IIM, IIT, Hydro-Engineering College, Kendriya Vidyalayas and a central university in the state, subsidies on light weight tractors and power tillers for farmers, extension of industrial package for economic development of the state, completion of hydro-power plants, conservation of snow leopards and increased state representation in the Indian Army.

Mr. Anurag Thakur has also been able to fully utilize his Member of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS) fund for the development of his constituency. It may be noted here that according to the government statistics of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, Rs.2706.61 crores of the MPLADS funds were still lying unspent across India as on 01 March 2014.
