Support For Clean Energy Falls in 2013 - Atlas Asia Investment Partners

Print article Print article
2014-02-25 10:28:50 - Atlas Asia Investment Partners says the falling cost of solar panels and wind farms contributes to decline in investor confidence in fossil fuel alternatives.

Atlas Asia Investment Partners have stated that the broad-based fall in renewable energy investment quickened in 2013 as the prices of solar panels and wind farms dropped and consequently unnerving investor confidence in fossil fuel alternatives.

Deals to bankroll clean energy and efficiency projects declined 12% to $254 billion in 2013 representing an acceleration over the 9.1% fall from a record high of $318 billion in 2012 from the year before.

The data which was published at a United Nations meeting in New York represents a setback for the drive to boost funding for cleaner energy. According to Atlas Asia Investment Partners analysts, the yearly investment in renewables needs to double to $500 billion by decade-end and double again to $1 trillion

by 2030 to mitigate global warming.

“There’s a massive gap in clean energy investment compared to that in traditional fossil fuels,” said a Atlas Asia Investment Partners energy sector analyst.

“Achieving the $1 trillion a year target represents a huge challenge but we have to get there if we’re to protect and safeguard the long-term sustainability of the planet.”

Atlas Asia Investment Partners says it expects the decline in investment to continue although it sees a bottoming in 2014. “We expect to see some consolidation in the renewable energy investment space and, with it, opportunities for investors to turn a very tidy profit,” said the Atlas Asia Investment Partners analyst.

The firm believes that recent agreements which saw Chinese manufacturers of solar panels to saturate the EU with cheaply priced products have harmed the investment landscape for those who may have considered investing in solar panel companies in Europe and the US.
