Summit in Brazil to discuss Globally Harmonized System for Hazard Classification & Labeling - GHS
Workers employed with firms dealing with hazardous chemicals are always vulnerable to health and safety concerns. Proper training and equipment is necessary to ensure effective handling of such chemicals. A firm was recently fined when its employees were exposed to a risk of asthma as a result of spraying a harmful chemical. The importance of communicating the classification and properties of hazardous chemicals is imperative. 2nd Annual LatAm HSE in Oil, Gas, Petrochemicals and Energy to be held in Rio de Janeiro - Brazil on 18 - 19 November will see a presentation on Globally Harmonized System for Hazard Classification & Labeling - GHS and its
benefits in ensuring health and safety of employers and employees. GHS provides information on hazards of various chemicals so that appropriate measures can be taken in dealing with them. The topic will be covered by Vicky Yilalis, Safety and Health Specialist at the United States Department of Labor.
The summit is being supported by The National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels - ANP. Alex Garcia de Almeida, Superintendencia de Sugaranca Operacional e Meio Ambiente at ANP will be presenting the keynote address on Brazilian offshore safety regime and what ANP is developing to improve its efforts aiming avoid major accidents on day one of the summit. ANP is the regulatory body of the Brazilian government for activities related to the exploitation, production and distribution of oil, natural gas and biofuels in Brazil. As the federal autarchy responsible for implementing the national policy for these sectors, ANP focuses on guaranteeing the fuel supply and protecting consumers’ interests.
Ms. Yilalis is an Occupational Safety and Health Bilingual Trainer and Consultant for the State of Nevada Safety Consultation and Training Section, Nevada; OSHA State Program. She has 15 years of experience in the safety and health field. When asked about the significance of her topic, Ms. Yilalis said, "The use of chemicals to enhance and improve life is a widespread practice worldwide, but alongside the benefits of these products there is also a potential for adverse effects to people or the environment. The information targets many different countries about using information dissemination as a regulatory means to address chemical hazards. While laws and regulations are similar in many aspects, their differences are significant enough to result in different labels or SDS for the same chemical in different countries."
Talking about the benefits of attending the summit Ms. Yilalis said, "Attendees will benefit from this summit by sharing a common interest in all aspects of safety and health, furthermore, listening and participating with a wide world group of speakers and panelist discussing the technical aspects of a HSE Department will give them the opportunity to learn, develop, and manage a better safety and health management system which is essential to all industries worldwide."
Topics like creating a safe and a healthy environment culture, the effects of organizational culture on the reliability of emergency planning, HSE management system & human behavior and waste minimization practices in the petroleum industry will be covered by speakers representing organizations like the Ministry of Energy & Mines - Peru, DNV Software, Shell, Baker Hughes, Tiger Companies and Petrobras. The summit will serve as an excellent opportunity for delegates to interact with HSE experts and to learn and implement the latest health and safety practices.
